Cambodia Hopes to Attract More Chinese Tourists in Year of People-to-People Exchange

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia and China have designated 2024 as the year of people-to-people exchanges, which also year coincides with the year of people-to-people exchanges between ASEAN and China. Prime Minister Hun Manet warmly welcomed a Chinese delegation and the opportunity for more Chinese tourists to Cambodia.

In his message on January 12, the PM recalled the relationship between the two countries and their peoples, which is deeply rooted in history and continues to the modern era. He noted that the leadership of the king and of his father, former Prime Minister Hun Sen, Cambodia has worked hard to continue to strengthen and expand its relationship with China, which was officially designated a "comprehensive strategic partnership" in 2010.

He stressed that as the next generation of Cambodian leaders assumes power, the Kingdom will continue to fully support the Chinese government's "Belt and Road Strategy", in addition to maintaining strong ties for the protection of both countries.

The PM hopes that by establishing 2024 as the year of people-to-people exchanges between Cambodia and China, it will be possible to attract more Chinese tourists and investors to visit and invest in Cambodia, and to strengthen solidarity, friendship and cooperation.

"Once again, I firmly believe that the current visit of His Excellency Ly Suli will further strengthen people-to-people relations. Cooperation in all fields will be stronger and closer, especially the deepening mutual understanding of the richness of cultural heritage and tourism between the two countries," he said.

The Prime Minister called on relevant ministries, institutions, the armed forces, the private sector and all stakeholders to participate with a high sense of responsibility to make "The Year of People-to-People Exchange fruitful and produce excellent results.

In that spirit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement following the election in Taiwan. On January 14, a spokesperson for the Ministry reiterated, “Cambodia’s resolute adherence to the One-China policy,” recognizing China’s sole legitimate authority over Taiwan.
